"These trees are magnificent, but even more magnificent is the sublime and moving space between them, as though with their growth it too increased."
— Rilke (quoted in The Poetics of Space – Intimate Immensity, Gaston Bachelard, p. 201)

In the summer of 2023, I discovered discarded wooden boxes near my studio. Their painterly patterns on the plywood immediately caught my attention. I soon realized they had arrived from China, once used to transport cleaning brushes for solar panels, later assembled by a small company in the kibbutz.

Intrigued, I brought the empty boxes into my studio and began stacking them, partially painting over the natural patterns. Over time, the arrangement evolved into a constructed and painted “forest” made from the boxes. This transformation eventually led to a tableau vivant—a living painting—performed for the first time on October 5, 2023, at the Vertigo Dance Festival in the Vertigo Eco-Art Village. Three dancers moved through the ‘trees’ to the sounds of crickets and frogs in a ten-minute performance, which was repeated four times during the festival.

Months later, after October 7th, I began dismantling the ‘trees’ and framing each part of the boxes. I painted the side, bottom, and top panels as well—another transformation, another chapter in the life of these discarded objects.
